Pundit delivers West Ham-Jesse Lingard verdict amid Fabrizio Romano’s Newcastle United update
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has mixed emotions about the potential return of Jesse Lingard to West Ham in January.
Lingard, 29, enjoyed a successful spell on loan at the London Stadium during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, scoring nine Premier League goals to help fire the Irons to the Europa League group stage.
After failing to break into the starting XI at Manchester United, the England international could now be on the move again, with Fabrizio Romano reporting on Monday (13 December) that David Moyes’ side want to re-sign him, though Newcastle United are preparing a loan or permanent move [Guardian].

“They’re talking about getting Jesse Lingard back,” ex-Irons star McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “I know the fans liked him and he had a wonderful time there.
“If he comes back and does the same I’ll be so happy but he didn’t want to sign for West Ham and he went back to Manchester United. I knew he wasn’t going to get into their team, it was a strange one.
“But there are other teams coming in for him now, so who knows.”

Out of favour
Lingard has played 12 times for Manchester United this season, with eight of his appearances coming in the Premier League.
However, he has made just two starts for the Red Devils in all competitions – one in the League Cup against the Irons and the other in a Champions League dead-rubber against BSC Young Boys.
In other West Ham news, Neil Warnock launched into an on-air rant over a recent Irons player controversy.
