Pundit backs West Ham United to sign Brazilians after fresh £42m link to Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie expects West Ham to try and sign some Brazilian players after bringing in Lucas Paqueta in the summer, despite links to Moises Caicedo.

The Brighton midfielder and Ecuador international has become a household name after his performances in the Premier League and at the World Cup, and was recently linked with a £42m move to the London Stadium as a potential replacement for Declan Rice.

But while McAvennie admits he hasn’t seen enough of Caicedo to have a real opinion on him, he shared his belief that we could soon see more Brazilians in east London after the summer capture of Paqueta “blew a lot of people out of the water”.

West Ham

“I don’t know the boy from Brighton to be honest,” he told West Ham Zone.

“Is he a young boy? David will know, I would think David will know who he wants.

“There’s a few players that I’ve suggested if you want like for like. I don’t know this boy from Brighton. Bringing in Paqueta blew a lot of people out of the water though.

“Now that he’s settling in, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a couple of Brazilians coming in.

“We’ll see how it goes.”

Rice is expected to leave in the summer of 2023 as he enters the final two years of his contract with West Ham, having already made clear that he wants to play Champions League football.

That would leave the Irons with a gaping hole in their midfield that needs filling, and with Paqueta highly-rated across Europe it would make sense for them to try and keep him happy too.

Caicedo is also said to be being tracked by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, so there will no doubt be stiff competition if he is indeed a target for David Moyes.
