‘No doubting his ability’ – Exclusive: McAvennie backs Benrahma for West Ham success

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has backed West Ham United winger Said Benrahma to start in the Premier League sooner rather than later.

The Algerian international came off the bench against Manchester United and has yet to earn his full debut from the start of games.

David Moyes appears to have favoured Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen so far this season, with both catching the eye at the London Stadium.

McAvennie claimed that Benrahma will want to stay in the side once given the chance, but the form of Fornals could delay that.

“I think he’s a good player,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“There’s no doubting his ability, but Fornals is doing alright out there – he’s going to come on in games and get a chance and once he gets it, unlike Haller, I think he takes it.

“I think if Benrahma gets in, he’ll want to stay in.”

Benrahma came off the bench once again in the 3-1 defeat against Manchester United on Saturday evening.

After claiming assists against both Fulham and Villa, it was a quiet evening for the 25-year-old against the Red Devils.

The same can be said for Fornals though. The Spaniard hit the post, but also finished the game with his worst passing accuracy of the season according to WhoScored.

With a big game against old rivals Leeds on Friday, a big decision is awaiting Moyes on who to choose out wide at Elland Road.
