McAvennie rubbishes new Man United contract for West Ham loan star Lingard
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has rubbished the notion of Jesse Lingard returning to Manchester United and signing a new contract after his loan spell at West Ham ends.
Lingard, 28, joined the Hammers on loan from Man United in January after failing to make a Premier League appearance for the Old Trafford club in the first half of the season.
However, since his temporary switch to East London, the attacker has found himself in fine form for both club and country, scoring five goals and supplying three assists in seven league outings for the Irons.
Lingard’s form at the London Stadium has led to the Sun reporting that Man United are open to the attacker returning ahead of next season and are considering offering him a new three-year contract.
However, McAvennie isn’t having any of that and has urged West Ham to sign the England ace permanently once his loan deal is up.
“Get Lingard signed because he looks like he’s enjoying himself,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“He was way out of the team at Man United. There’s no going back there, they’re not going to let him get back in because [Bruno] Fernandes is in the midfield in his position.
“He won’t get a game there.”
Lingard has made himself at home at West Ham since his January love move to the capital.
Not only has he shone in claret and blue in the Premier League but he has also returned to the England squad and won the player of the match award in the 5-0 win over San Marino.
While that was only San Marino, Lingard has directly contributed to goals against Aston Villa, Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal in the Premier League.
With easier fixtures on the horizon for David Moyes’ side, it makes you wonder how good the 28-year-old can actually play.
