McAvennie predicts West Ham clash v Brighton

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has backed West Ham to earn a 1-0 win when they take on Brighton at the AMEX on Saturday night.

David Moyes and his players know that if they want to stand any real chance of finishing in the top-four they need to win on the south coast and hope other results go their way over the course of the weekend.

As it stands, the Irons are in sixth place, six points shy of qualifying for the Champions League with three games left. Chelsea, who are fourth, have two games left.

Unfortunately, the Hammers have lost three of their last four matches, including a demoralising 1-0 defeat to Everton last weekend.

It’s allowed Liverpool to move back into contention for a spot in the top-four while, of course, if Chelsea drop down to fifth, they can gain qualification by winning the Champions League final.

It seems like a massive uphill task and McAvennie is now just focused on seeing West Ham qualify for European football.

He thinks his former club has enough about them to beat Brighton this weekend, fortunately.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “They’re quite good down there but I think we’ll go and get a wee win, 1-0 to West Ham.

“It’s been a great season but it would be awful for them to not get European football.”

In the history of the two clubs, West Ham have won 18, drawn 18 and lost 18 matches against Brighton.

That neat record will end this weekend at the AMEX but Brighton have proven to be somewhat of a bogey team for the Hammers in recent years.

All of the last four matches between the two sides have ended in draws while the Irons haven’t won against the south coast side in their last seven attempts dating back to 2017.

We need that rotten run to end this weekend, especially as we don’t want to slip down below Tottenham in the Premier League standings.

In other West Ham news, this Irons star is being forced to move house because of what fans are doing.
