McAvennie Exclusive: Angelo Ogbonna could struggle to get West Ham spot back

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has claimed that West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna could struggle to earn his spot back after returning from injury.

The Italian has missed the games against Spurs, Sheffield United and Manchester City after picking up a problem in the FA Cup defeat against the red side of Manchester.

McAvennie claimed that Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena have been great replacements, and can do exactly what Ogbonna has done there previously.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said, “I think so.

“Because when one of them get injured, if your replacement does well, you wouldn’t get back in, it wasn’t a given for you to go back in.

“Although he’s done well, he’ll need to do it in training again, because you’ve got Balbuena as well, he’s in the background.

“The good thing about it, whoever comes in, obviously they’re getting trained. When they come in, they know exactly what they are doing.”

Ogbonna didn’t make the bench for the City clash this afternoon.

It is starting to become a big worry for the Irons, with the Italian having been a revelation during this successful run in the Premier League.

McAvennie is spot on, though.

The Irons and David Moyes have been able to maintain that level of success during his absence, and that is due to replacements such as Diop delivering the same performance levels.
