McAvennie blasts Yarmolenko as ’embarrassing’ West Ham video clip goes viral
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has blasted West Ham forward Andriy Yarmolenko for an “embarrassing” dive against Kidderminster on Saturday [5 February].
Yarmolenko, 32, is out of contract in the summer and had only started six games in all competitions this season prior to West Ham’s trip to Aggborough to play Kidderminster in the FA Cup fourth round.
The experienced Ukraine international was largely ineffective in the Hammers’ laboured 2-1 extra-time win over the National League North side but a video clip of him went viral at the weekend for a dive.
Yarmolenko was in on goal with his side 1-0 down and after the slightest contact from a Kidderminster player, threw himself to the ground.
McAvennie is furious with Yarmolenko’s attempt to win a penalty kick but admits it’s something that’s widespread within football these days.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “It’s part and parcel of today’s game, unfortunately.
“But it’s embarrassing.
“He’s not getting regular games and doing that won’t do him any favours.
“I like Yarmolenko as a player but have a word with yourself, son.”

Yarmolenko was an unused substitute for the Hammers on Tuesday night as they returned to Premier League action with a 1-0 win over Watford at the London Stadium.
The Ukrainian forward has made 75 appearances in all competitions since joining the East London club from Borussia Dortmund in July 2018.
In other West Ham news, Tom Davis has blasted this “embarrassment” for his woeful performance against Kidderminster.
