Moyes to play Antonio and Calvert-Lewin together if West Ham sign Everton star – pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie predicts David Moyes will change his formation if West Ham sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton.

The Sun reported on 22 January that the Irons are eyeing up a £60million swoop to sign the 24-year-old England international from Everton.

West Ham’s shortage of strikers is well-documented but Michail Antonio has been in superb form for the East London outfit.

If Calvert-Lewin does swap the Toffees for the Hammers, McAvennie believes that neither he nor Antonio will miss out and Moyes will instead change his formation to utilise both forwards.

“I think they’ve got to get a striker – they’ve got to do that,” said McAvennie in an interview with West Ham Zone this week [26 January].

“If they can get Calvert-Lewin then he’s not going to sit there and be an understudy to Antonio, which is great because he’ll want to fight him for a place.

Antonio will get a boost and it’ll be good for the two of them. It’d be great.

He’ll definitely not go there as a back-up striker, that’s for sure.

If they buy him then David will change the system to play the two of them because I think the two of them will play well together.

They’ll score a lot of goals.”

Calvert-Lewin has only just returned from a lengthy injury at crisis club Everton but has still scored three goals in his six Premier League appearances this season.

Antonio, 31, has just two goals in his last 14 league outings for the Hammers, who have lost back-to-back games and dropped out of the top-four.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have tabled a bid to sign this £16.8million-rated defender.
