Lucas Paqueta urged to stay at West Ham United for another season as ‘problem’ verdict shared

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Lucas Paqueta should stay at West Ham for at least another season amid interest from Manchester City.

The Premier League champions have held talks with the Hammers about a deal for the Brazil star this summer, as per Sky Sports (10 August).

The publication added that the midfielder is “very keen” on the move, having only moved to the London Stadium from Lyon last summer.

The 25-year-old has an £85million buy-out clause in his Hammers contract, but it cannot be triggered until next summer.

Paqueta registered tallies of five goals and seven assists from his 41 matches in all competitions in claret and blue last season.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Getting in Edson Alvarez isn’t bad, but the only problem now is the talk that Paqueta might be leaving.

“Bringing players in leaves us better than what we had, but if Paqueta stays it would be good too.

“I don’t know if he will get a game for Manchester City, I don’t know if he would be a first-team choice. That’s my problem with it.

“I think another year at the London Stadium would be good, then he could walk into any team I think.”
