Lucas Paqueta sanction will not be reduced as West Ham star directs anger in wrong place – ‘Unacceptable’

Lucas Paqueta is at the centre of more controversy after his red card against Liverpool.

The midfielder had only just come back from suspension after picking up five yellow cards before the international break.

Now, Paqueta is set for more time on the sidelines at West Ham after his quick double yellow cards for dissent.

While the midfielder has since come out to address the incident, it may not prevent him from having his suspension extended.

Keith Hackett: Lucas Paqueta’s tweet may not save him from extended ban

Going forward, it remains a possibility that Paqueta has his suspension extended at West Ham.

Currently, the Brazilian international is set for a one-match ban. However, his sarcastic clap after his sending off could see this increase further.

While Paqueta has since posted on X that the incident was a reflection of “everything he had to endure” with the FA, Keith Hackett does not think this will save him.

He exclusively told West Ham Zone: “His employer his directly responsible for supporting any welfare or health issues.

“With someone who commands a very high salary, if he is having mental issues, then he is in a position to seek additional professional advice at his cost if he feels the club is falling short of a duty of care.

“The Laws of the Game, the responsibility of the International Football Association Board, those laws contain specific sanctions on players showing dissent by word or action.

“All participants in the game are expected to play under the laws, and referees are expected to apply them.

“His behaviour was unacceptable, he broke the law and the referee applied the law correctly.

“Having been shown a yellow known as a caution, it is a warning that an improvement in behaviour is expected.

“To continue to dispute the decision was rightly sanctioned with a second yellow followed by a red.

“The referee was applying the law correctly.

“The player, having received the sanction, then showed further disrespect by applauding the actions of the referee.

“If the player needs help then he should speak to his Manager and Club Officials.

“If he thinks that his public comments will help to reduce any sanction, then he is not going to achieve that.”

What did Paqueta’s posts say?

Paqueta did not hold back in his post after the red card.

Previously, Paqueta had been under investigation by the FA for potential spot-fixing. However, he was then cleared after a nearly two-year investigation.

Nevertheless, this appears to have affected the midfielder in a negative way, which helped to contribute to the red card.

In his post, he put: “It’s ridiculous to have your life and career affected for two years without any psychological support from the federation.

“Perhaps this ridiculous behaviour is just a reflection of everything I’ve had to endure and, it seems, have to continue enduring! I’m sorry if I’m not perfect.”

In another post, he also apologised to fans in Portuguese. It reads: “I understand that now I have to come across as the villain, it’s hard to live with everything that was caused in my life and in my psyche!

“I’ll keep trying to ensure they don’t affect me even more. This doesn’t justify my expulsion, and that’s why I apologise to the fans and my teammates!”
