Frank McAvennie believes that West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta will play even better next season if he is cleared of the betting charges levelled against him.

The FA have charged the Brazilian with four counts of spot-fixing - getting booked intentionally for betting purposes.

And McAvennie - speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone - has shared how impressed he has been with the 26-year-old's performances in light of the allegations made against him.

"I knew it was coming, but can you prove that [Paqueta got booked on purpose]? I don't know how they're going to do this. I don't get it," he said.

"He's a hell of a player with that hanging over him. What kind of player are we going to have if he gets that cleared? Because pressure's a hell of a thing. [If] you've got that hanging over you, you might not play. That's a hell of a weight he's had on his shoulders.

"I hope he gets off with it, obviously, because I'm West Ham, and hopefully we can see the best of him - because he can obviously get a lot better. If he's had that hanging over him and he still plays like that, that's a hell of a statement."

How good has Lucas Paqueta been for West Ham United in 2023/24?

Paqueta's attacking numbers this season have not been quite as impressive as he would have liked.

Four goals and six assists in 31 Premier League appearances is not bad, by any stretch, but the Brazilian is certainly capable of more.

However, his work in other areas - off the ball in particular - has been as outstanding as ever.

West Ham ace Lucas Paqueta is facing a potential lifetime ban from football.
