Keith Hackett slams VAR and Jon Moss for missing West Ham penalty v Burnley

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Keith Hackett has blasted Jon Moss for his work on VAR during the West Ham United draw against Burnley on Sunday.

Craig Dawson was taken down by Dwight McNeil but it wasn’t deemed to have been a clear and obvious error by the officials.

Hackett insisted it was a penalty, but it wasn’t the fault of the referee, who didn’t have a clear view of the incident, but he should have been helped by technology.

“It was a penalty kick,” he told West Ham Zone. “In fairness to the referee, he hasn’t got a prayer because he’s looking through a crowd of players.

“This is not the referee’s fault for not awarding it, come on VAR, where were you? You went missing. Jonathan Moss, he didn’t have a good weekend.

Awful.

When will consistency ever arrive in the officiating and the use of technology in the Premier League? We’re starting to feel like the answer is never.

We could possibly accept the referee not seeing the foul through the crowded area, but isn’t that what VAR is there for? That’s what we thought.

An official missing a foul is a clear and obvious error as he didn’t hand the penalty, something that the technology should have seen and given the official the chance to look at it again clearer.

Thankfully, it didn’t end in defeat at Turf Moor or this could have been blown up even more but it is still an important two points dropped in our quest for Champions League football.

We pray for more consistency.
