Keith Hackett reacts as Ben Campbell gets ready to quit West Ham for the PGMOL
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...
Keith Hackett believes it won’t be plain sailing for Ben Campbell as he prepares to quit West Ham to move to the PGMOL.
Mike Keegan reported this week that the Professional Game Match Officials Board will hand Campbell the Head of Communications role to shine a better light on the organisation.
Hackett believes the Irons chief will be stuck between a rock and a hard place as he prepares for his new role in the New Year.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Hackett said, “When I was boss of the PGMOL, the communication was handled by the Premier League.
“I’ve no doubt that Ben Campbell is a very capable guy, and there is absolutely no doubt that they need to communicate more like a business and not rely on amateurs.
“What I think Ben will find, is he won’t be able to do this job without undue interference, he’s working for a boss who doesn’t want to communicate.
“We don’t see him, and I think it’s true that managers don’t see him from what I’m told, so I think Campbell has got quite a task. Is he going to be given the freedom he is anticipating? Because he is between a rock and a hard place.”

Greener on the other side?
It is suggested that having worked for an organisation where many of its members aren’t popular was identified as a key skill.
We assume that is pointing at GSB, with Campbell having worked at the club during some difficult times during his role.
The Irons are now entering a much brighter stage with success on and off the pitch, and the PGMOL are certainly the opposite.
Whether this comes back to bite him will remain unknown until the end of next year and some time in the role, but it leaves the Hammers with a hole to fill.
If someone needs reinforcements, it is the PGMOL so Campbell has got a big job on his hands and we wish him luck.
