Keith Hackett amazed by Declan Rice outburst after West Ham United loss v Frankfurt, heavy ban and fine coming

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Keith Hackett has insisted that West Ham United star Declan Rice should expect a “big punishment” for his tunnel outburst against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League last week.

The ex-FIFA official suggested that Rice may be set for a “heavy fine” as well as a three-match ban, which could even be extended to more games.

Rice labelled the officials in the 1-0 defeat at Frankfurt as “Corrupt” as Aaron Cresswell was sent off before the Irons crashed out of the semi-finals.

“I’d be amazed,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“If that information which is likely in the hands of UEFA, he can expect a big punishment. What UEFA do is fine and punishment, so, he might expect a three-match ban minimum and a heavy fine.

“I think that referees at a senior level have a great deal of training and understanding of the frustration that players can build in a game. I was really shocked, I’ve not regarded him but clearly, he’s upset.”

Expected.

As soon as the video clip emerged of the incident, it was clear that wasn’t going to be the end of it.

UEFA will now be reviewing the footage and the report from the officials in that game, and will likely make their decision sooner rather than late.

Three matches appear to be excessive should a “heavy” fine also be coming his way, but the Hammers and David Moyes will need to deal with the consequences.

This won’t likely take effect until next season in whichever European competition we are in should we qualify, meaning Rice could miss the first three games or more in the group stages.

This is certainly one to keep an eye on.
