Julen Lopetegui to be given until January amid ‘great’ West Ham United news

Dan Bardell believes Julen Lopetegui has saved his short-term future at West Ham with the Newcastle United win but will be re-assessed in January.

The Hammers took a shock win away from St James’ Park on Monday (25 November), which was just what the Spaniard needed after a tough start to the campaign.

The head coach has come under pressure for performances at the London Stadium, with clashes against the Magpies and Arsenal feeling impactful for his future.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell thinks the ex-Real Madrid boss has saved himself until after Christmas but will be reviewed again in the new year.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Bardell said: “The Newcastle result will give him until the end of the festive period and he’ll be looked at again in January.

It was a great result to go away to St James’ and win 2-0. Newcastle should have scored in the first half but West Ham did score and kept a clean sheet so they win.

I’m still not convinced by what I’m seeing on the pitch, long term, but I do think the Newcastle result has bought Lopetegui some time.

Julen Lopetegui earns time with West Ham win at Newcastle United

The Irons took all three points from their visit up north and now have to use that as a springboard for the rest of the season under the Spanish boss – or however long he is given.

This may not be easy immediately given that the upcoming clash is against the Gunners, who are looking to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title.

It makes sense to hand Lopetegui some time over the Christmas period and, if things do go downhill, his role can be reviewed again in the winter.

In other West Ham news, one stalwart could be set for a London Stadium exit in the coming weeks.
