James Ward-Prowse is waste of money as last-gasp West Ham United exit on cards

Frank McAvennie has branded James Ward-Prowse a “waste of money” after being linked with a last-gasp move away from West Ham ahead of the transfer deadline.

Southampton are attempting to re-sign the midfielder on a permanent deal, according to TEAMtalk, just one year after arriving at the London Stadium from the Saints for £30million [BBC Sport].

It is understood that the newly promoted side may only be able to afford a loan deal, as per GiveMeSport, but the 29-year-old has been told he is not part of Julen Lopetegui’s plans.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He did so well last year but we’ve got so many players in midfield now. I think he’s going to be given limited game time. The surprise for me is that Lopetegui hasn’t played all the signings together yet.

“Ward-Prowse is supposed to be the best free-kick taker in the Premier League but we’ve not seen him score one yet for West Ham. He was the best in the league but he’s not done it so far, so that was a waste of money. He’s a decent player but he’ll be wanting to play, so good luck to him.”

James Ward-Prowse set to leave West Ham United

Ward-Prowse was a key part of David Moyes’ side last season, making 34 Premier League starts, but there was always going to be several outgoings this summer under the guidance of Lopetegui.

With several creative players being brought into the squad, it may surprise many to see the former Saints captain being shipped out after just one season, especially after grabbing 14 goal contributions in the league last term.

However, with the sudden influx of signings, Lopetegui needs to make room at the London Stadium, and it seems more and more likely that Ward-Prowse is going to be one of the players sacrificed before 30 August.
