‘It is a strange one’ – Exclusive: McAvennie unsure about Snodgrass future at West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is unsure about whether West Ham should let Robert Snodgrass leave the club this month amid speculation linking the winger with West Brom.

The Express & Star has reported that Sam Allardyce is eyeing up experienced players to pad out his squad this month as the Baggies aim to avoid relegation back to the Championship and Irons outcast Snodgrass, 33, has emerged on his radar.

Snodgrass’ contract at West Ham expires in the summer and the former Hull winger has earned just four minutes’ worth of game-time in the Premier League this season.

McAvennie believes the Scottish attacker is someone who fits the mould of player who David Moyes would like in his squad but cannot fathom why he isn’t featuring more.

“It is a strange one,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone when quizzed about Snodgrass’ future.

“David Moyes has got this team working like a machine. They are all working together and there is no separate players.

“Snod works hard but he is not getting in. I do not know why and while he may want to get away I think he will be on big wages. I do not know if he will go.”

Snodgrass is usually always among Moyes’ substitutes in the Premier League but it’s hard to see how he fits into the team at the moment.

The winger, who can play on both flanks, is below the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Andriy Yarmolenko in the pecking order at the moment.

Fortunately for the Hammers, there haven’t been too many injury issues in that area of the squad and that has limited Snodgrass’ playing time.

However, we can see why he’s not playing much. He’s 33, out of contract at the end of the season and unlikely to have much of a future at the London Stadium with Moyes preferring younger options who could be playing for the club for years and years.

If Snodgrass leaves this month, we’d be happy to see him join a team where he plays a lot and if Sam Allardyce wants him at the Baggies, that could happen.

In other West Ham news, Spurs could make a move to sign Issa Diop this month.
