‘I’m so glad they got him’ – Exclusive: McAvennie wowed by Lingard performances for West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is delighted by what he has seen from Jesse Lingard since West Ham signed the Manchester United attacker on loan in January.

Lingard, 28, netted twice on his debut against Aston Villa and won West Ham’s first penalty of the Premier League season against Sheffield United on Monday night.

The 24-times England international has been regularly criticised for his performances at Man United in recent seasons but McAvennie is thrilled David Moyes managed to sign the player who wowed earlier in his career at Old Trafford.

“I said Lingard would be a wonderful signing if we got the old Lingard but not a good signing if it was the guy of today,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “Luckily, the old Lingard has turned up.

“His hunger, his enthusiasm – it’s just rubbing off on everyone.

“He chases lost causes and it’s great to see someone like that back in the team, someone who’s enjoying playing. He’s got a smile on his face as well.

“I’m thinking, ‘wonderful’. I’m so glad they got him and he’s found his zing again, if you know what I mean. He’s got a bounce in his step and I’m delighted for the boy.

“It’s not too late and he could push his way into the England squad.”

Lingard has been a breath of fresh air in this West Ham side that we didn’t even realise was needed.

When the Man United attacker was first linked with the Hammers, we admittedly had our reservations because Moyes already has several players in his squad that play similar roles. Even Trevor Sinclair thought the same [talkSPORT].

However, even when playing with the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen, Lingard is able to impress.

Our panel of West Ham Super Fans were blown away by the 28-year-old on Monday after the 3-0 win against Sheffield United, with one fan raving about the player for the way he was “involved in everything”.

He absolutely was and we cannot wait to see more from him as the season progresses.

If Lingard continues to play well, Moyes has to try and sign him permanently.

In other West Ham news, Liverpool and Manchester United have posted an interest in Declan Rice.
