Frank McAvennie admits West Ham lucky after late goal v Leicester

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

West Ham rescued a late point from Sunday’s game away at Leicester City thanks to the upper arm of Craig Dawson in stoppage-time.

Youri Tielemans and Ricardo Pereira had put the Foxes ahead having cancelled out Jarrod Bowen’s opener but Dawson bundled home a set-piece to earn a share of the spoils.

It was an incident rife in controversy though as it appeared to hit Dawson’s arm as it went in.

The Premier League rules on handball, as explained by inews, say that because it was the high upper arm of Dawson, it isn’t actually handball at all, regardless of the outcome.

McAvennie, a former West Ham striker, was glad to see the goal given after a VAR check with the Hammers deserving of a point from the game.

“Well, you have seen them given and you have seen them ruled out. It’s VAR again, isn’t it?” McAvennie said exclusively to West Ham Zone.

“The referee saw nothing wrong with it and that’s good enough for me. You have to take the breaks when they come to you and I thought West Ham deserved a point.

“Well done to Dawson on getting the goal as well, he did everything right. You need a bit of luck in these situations and that’s what we got.”

It was exactly the kind of result the Irons needed but they would have hoped for more given Manchester United and Tottenham both dropped points in the race for the top four.,

The Hammers now host struggling Newcastle on Saturday (19 February) with three points the only acceptable outcome for David Moyes’ side.

In other West Ham news, Simon Jordan and a talkSPORT guest were involved in a heated debate over this Hammers icon.
