Frank McAvennie: West Ham would be like Leicester if David Moyes did not leave
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
West Ham would be like Leicester City if David Moyes didn’t leave the London Stadium at the end of his first spell in 2018.
Moyes was initially hired by the Hammers in November 2017 with the team in the relegation zone.
He managed to keep the Irons in the Premier League but his contract was not extended past the end of the 2017/18 campaign and he was eventually replaced by Manuel Pellegrini.
West Ham didn’t progress with the Chilean and ended up letting him go last season only to welcome Moyes back to East London.
After avoiding relegation again, Moyes has this season taken the Hammers to a sixth-placed finish, Europa League qualification and almost a spot in the Champions League group stages.
He’s done a marvellous job in his second spell at West Ham but McAvennie believes that the Hammers would be on a par with Leicester if they had kept their faith in the ex-Everton boss back in 2018.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “David’s done a wonderful job but if they hadn’t got rid of him in the first place, we would be an established team fighting for the top four.
“Look at what happened to Leicester. They won the league but they’ve kept on since then.
“They’ve not won it again but they’re challenging for Europe every year and are becoming one of the top six teams.
“That’s what I want for West Ham.
“We’ve been up there fighting with your Tottenhams, your Arsenals and Chelseas before, that’s what it used to be like.
“I’m delighted they’ve come out on top of them, apart from Chelsea, who we were so near to beating to the Champions League places.”
West Ham finished this season with 65 points and ended up just one point behind fifth-placed Leicester and two away from fourth-placed Chelsea.
One more win would have seen us qualify for the Champions League.
What a job Moyes has done and you have to agree with McAvennie. If only GSB had more faith in the Scot back in 2018.
In other West Ham news, this “frustrated” fan favourite has dropped a hint about his future amid talk of him moving on.
