Frank McAvennie: West Ham should avoid a move for Chris Wood
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
West Ham should avoid making a move for Burnley striker Chris Wood this summer, according to Frank McAvennie.
The Mirror reported last week that the Irons were eyeing a summer swoop for the New Zealand international after he struck 12 times in the Premier League last season.
Aston Villa and Everton were also credited with an interest in the Clarets forward, who would cost at least £25million.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, ex-Irons striker McAvennie believes that David Moyes should look elsewhere.
McAvennie said: “He’d be big money wouldn’t he? He’s the wrong age for big money. I think those days are gone now for West Ham.
“He’s more of a physical presence. He’s decent but you don’t want someone just to fire balls into the box, that’s not West Ham’s way now.“

Not the right profile
Wood is a terrific Premier League striker, evidenced by his goal tally over the last four seasons, where he has hit double figures for Premier League goals in each of them.
But he’s 29-years-old, and turns 30 later this year.
Is that really the sort of age bracket we should be looking at? Particularly if we’re being quoted over £25million?
Moyes has enjoyed tremendous success in recent transfer windows by thinking outside of the box – look at the success of Slavia Prague duo Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal, and Championship buys like Jarrod Bowen and Craig Dawson.
Those are markets where we have found real value, and we should be trying to make similar purchases this summer.
In other West Ham news, Ally McCoist was blown away by this Irons star compared to a Manchester United legend.
