Frank McAvennie: West Ham must put hands in pockets for Declan Rice contract

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has called on the West Ham owners to pay Declan Rice what he deserves as contract reports rumble on.

The 22-year-old’s future at the London Stadium has been brought into doubt over the last few weeks as The Telegraph reported that the England star has rejected two contract offers amid a £200,000-a-week demand.

Football Insider reported last week [22/07/21] that the Irons were preparing to offer him a bumper new contract to keep him at the club for at least one more year, using money from the expected exits of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko, with the Brazilian having already completed his move to Lazio.

Ex-Irons forward McAvennie believes GSB must step forward and pay the price.

“I would like the club to get his contract sorted,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“Why do people wait this long? Go and get it sorted.

“I think he will leave West Ham but do I want it to be this year? No, I’d love him to leave when he’s established us into a team that regularly challenges near the top.

“I would like him to stay and in one or two years he will get his move, he’s still young and there’s plenty of time for him to go and win trophies.

“He will go all the way to the top, he’s destined for it. That time will come.

“West Ham need to give him the deal he deserves, it doesn’t matter whether the owners like it or not, it’s the market value.”

In other West Ham news, the Irons have made an approach to sign this English 24-year-old.
