Frank McAvennie: West Ham have two centre-halves who are surplus to requirements

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

West Ham have players in their squad who could have been sold in order to welcome fresh faces in January, according to Frank McAvennie.

David Moyes didn’t sign any new senior players in January despite a clear need to add to the defence and land a new striker.

McAvennie feels there are players in the defence who are no longer needed at the London Stadium who should’ve been moved on.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “They’re not going to buy anyone that’s not going to improve their position but I do think there are a lot of players out there who they could have got.

They’ve got a couple of centre-halves on the books there that are surplus to requirements now. They could let them go and get somebody in.

I’m just a wee bit disappointed.

I’d like to see them keep that challenge up and keep the big players.

When you’re matching the players’ ambitions, they’re happy to stay.”

It’s unclear which centre-backs McAvennie feels are “surplus to requirements” but Issa Diop was linked with a move away from the London Stadium in January.

The Sun reported on 29 January that Newcastle had approached the Irons with an enquiry for the 25-year-old Frenchman.

It was also claimed that Moyes would’ve sold him for £10million if he could have signed a replacement in time.
