Frank McAvennie: West Ham Europa League quarter-final would be ‘dream come true’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham are on the back foot going into the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie against Sevilla after a narrow 1-0 defeat in Spain.

David Moyes’ side toiled hard at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Thursday evening but Munir’s second-half goal was enough to give Los Rojiblancos the edge heading to the London Stadium next Thursday.

But with only a one-goal advantage, the Hammers will back themselves to turn the game on its head in the home leg.

Ex-Irons striker Frank McAvennie is very hopeful that his former side can do just that and maybe go on to have great success in the competition too.

“I think they can do it; I don’t care if they bring players back,” McAvennie exclusively told West Ham Zone on Friday (11 March).

“To be fair, I don’t think anybody played particularly badly last night and some of theirs must have played out of their skin.

“I’m very hopeful, I really am because to get to the quarter-finals would be a dream come true.”

Next Thursday’s return fixture might be high on the Irons players’ agenda but they absolutely must not lose focus on their next Premier League game.

Aston Villa are the visitors to the London Stadium on Sunday and they will be on a high from three successive wins and clean sheets.

Anything but the best won’t be good enough for Moyes and a fourth consecutive defeat will fall at the feet of the Hammers.

In other West Ham news, this Central American international is a reported transfer target for the Irons this summer.
