Frank McAvennie: West Ham ‘absolutely battered’ Sevilla in Europa League

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham United have given themselves a great chance of progressing in the Europa League despite a 1-0 defeat away at Sevilla last night.

Munir scored the only goal of the game for Los Rojiblancos as the Spaniards take a slender lead to the London Stadium for the second leg next week.

Manager David Moyes selected a very strong side at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and they performed admirably throughout the evening albeit on the losing side.

Former Hammers striker Frank McAvennie liked what he saw from the Irons last night and reaffirmed that the tie is never done until the final whistle.

“It’s never done,” McAvennie said exclusively to West Ham Zone. “The problem is they are going to get a lot of players back.

“They’re a damn good team; they’ve won the Europa League a few times.

“I was fairly happy with David Moyes last night and the team he put out and the chances we got.

“It should have been a clean sheet really because they absolutely battered them and I thought ‘that’s not right, we should have one or two goals’.

“It was incredible bad luck for David Moyes with the goal but it’s one of them.”

The Hammers might have one eye on next week’s return leg but they have a tricky Premier League assignment at home to Aston Villa to contend with first on Sunday.

In other West Ham news, Moyes confirmed the absence of this star player for Sunday’s game against Villa in his press conference.
