Frank McAvennie wants West Ham to sign Southampton striker Danny Ings
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie believes Danny Ings would be an “ideal” signing for West Ham amid a reported contract impasse with Southampton.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Monday [05/07/21] that the 28-year-old striker had turned down the offer of a lucrative four-year contract with the south-coast club to make him their highest-paid player.
The former Liverpool frontman is said to favour a move away to test himself at a higher level, with Southampton set to make a decision over whether to sell him before his contract expires in 2022.

TalksSPORT journalist Alex Crook reported in May that West Ham were interested in signing Ings, and the Irons would be able to offer him European football next season in the form of the Europa League.
Ex-Irons striker McAvennie has suggested he would fit like a glove into the side under David Moyes.
“I think he’s a great player,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“He would be ideal. He’s a David Moyes type of player, he works his backside off.
“I think Ings is a great player, he can play with and without another striker.“

Aiming for the elite?
We’re a step up from the likes of Southampton at the moment, but would we be able to entice Ings given his ambitions?
If he just craves European football then he might well favour a move to east London, but given we are not perennial players in Europe he might well view it as a risky move to make given his age.
As such, it could be a difficult deal to pull off.
From our side, while he is a terrific striker who would undeniably do well under Moyes, it’s probably not a risk worth taking when his age and injury record is taken into account.
