Frank McAvennie wants West Ham to sign Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has predicted Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong to make a smooth adaptation to the Premier League if West Ham sign him this summer.

The 24-year-old has been consistently linked with West Ham this year after a sensational 2020/21 campaign with the Lancashire club, who he scored 29 goals for last season.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the Irons are frontrunners to prise him from the Championship club.

Ex-Irons striker McAvennie believes he could replicate the success of other Championships forwards if he makes the move to the London Stadium.

“It’s just a matter of who goes for him this summer because I think he’s better than Blackburn, no disrespect to them,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“I think he can step up, I definitely do.

“Nobody thought [Jarrod] Bowen or [Patrick] Bamford could do it but these strikers like to prove people wrong.

“I was gutted we didn’t go for [Ollie] Watkins last summer but this boy is a decent player and what I can gather about him at Blackburn is that they are raving about him highly.

“I would like to see Armstrong, just because of his age and his movement. He’s dynamic.”

With 44 goals in the last two seasons, Armstrong has been lighting up the Championship and he is one of the biggest second-tier stars at the moment.

That’s made him hot property, and it’s no wonder numerous clubs have been sniffing around for the Newcastle-born forward.

The success of Bamford and Watkins in the Premier League last season has paved the way for players to make the step up from the Championship.

Bamford scored 17 goals for Leeds United to inspire the Whites to a top-10 finish while Watkins struck 14 times for Aston Villa to earn an England call-up earlier this year.

Both were playing Championship football last season and made the step up with ease, so there’s no reason Armstrong cannot do the same.

In other West Ham news, an English striker wanted by the Irons is up for grabs for just £8million now.
