Frank McAvennie has urged David Moyes to use his expertise in the transfer market to sign another central defender for West Ham this summer.

The Irons announced last week that Paraguayan defender Fabian Balbuena would be leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

That would leave Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop as the only senior options at the club, with Winston Reid set to seal a permanent move to Brentford after his loan spell at the Bees last season [ExWHUemployee – Patreon].

The Irons are set for a more congested fixture list next season with the arrival of Europa League football at the London Stadium, and McAvennie believes signing another central defender should be top of Moyes’ wishlist.

“We’re going to be speculating from now until the end of the transfer window, so it depends who’s going,” the ex-Irons forward told West Ham Zone.

“I think we need to see four centre-halves anyway that’s for sure, I don’t think there will be a problem with Moyes getting a centre half in because he’s quite good at plucking someone from the Championship even.”

Central defence is one of the most important areas of the pitch and we would be leaving ourselves thoroughly exposed if we only had three senior options there.

Young Danish star Frederik Alves joined midway through the 2020/21 campaign but the 21-year-old is a mere novice in senior football, and he has yet to make an appearance for us.

Ogbonna suffered a few injury issues last season as well, which means we must protect ourselves for the future, particularly given the Italian and his partner Dawson are in their thirties.

Moyes also played a three-man defence on occasion so another body would be welcome if he wants to continue to alter between formations.
