We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has urged Jesse Lingard to leave Manchester United and join West Ham after Stuart Pearce’s open invitation on talkSPORT.

Irons coach Pearce told the radio station on Monday [16/08/21]: “We’d like him with us, there is no doubt about that.”

He added: “You never know, but at this moment in time, it looks like though he’s vying for a place in the Manchester United’s line-up.”

Speaking to West Ham Zone, ex-Irons attacker McAvennie has urged the 28-year-old to move for the sake of his international career.

“Lingard has to get into the England team, he’s not going to get a game at Manchester United, it doesn’t matter what he thinks,” McAvennie said.

“I know it’s Manchester United, but it doesn’t matter what he thinks, he’s not going to get a game there.

“He went to West Ham and proved them wrong so do it again. He seemed to love it and the boys love to have him and love his energy.

“I just think it’s a win-win. It’s stupid if he thinks otherwise, just go and do it.

“I’d love him to sign, Stuart Pearce is quite right. He’s a talent but he’ll get washed up at Manchester United again because he was an easily forgotten man there. He’s better than that.

“David Moyes will give him a game every week and build the team around him. He’ll be one of the top players there.”
