Frank McAvennie unimpressed by Craig Dawson recent form at West Ham
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has been unimpressed by Craig Dawson’s form at West Ham as the defender prepares to return from suspension against Burnley on Monday.
Dawson, 30, missed the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend after being sent off for two yellow cards a week earlier in the loss against Newcastle.
He’s going to be available to play at Turf Moor on Monday when the Irons make their way to Burnley, which can be seen as a positive due to how many injuries have plagued David Moyes’ squad as of late.
McAvennie is gutted with Declan Rice’s and Michail Antonio’s setbacks but seems to be glad that Angelo Ogbonna is back to play alongside Dawson.
“I don’t think it would be a problem if there weren’t injuries to Declan and Antonio. They are two big ones,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“Ogbonna was injured for a while too and that caused a problem and Dawson’s slipped a wee bit in the last few games, he’s not been as influential as he’s been.”
Dawson’s form has been a major as of late
Not only has he scored a couple of own goals but his red card against Newcastle was awful.
Speaking on Premier League Productions’ half-time show in the defeat to Newcastle, ex-Hammers boss Alan Curbishley described the second yellow as a “dreadful touch followed by an even reckless challenge”.
Dawson’s likely to benefit from Ogbonna returning. He played some of his best games alongside the Italian for the Hammers.
Let’s see how he can get on at Burnley on Monday.
It’s a game we really need to win in order to keep ourselves in the race for a possible top-four finish.
In other West Ham news, McAvennie’s also shared his thoughts on the Irons’ bid to land this goal machine from a British club.
