Frank McAvennie thinks Michail Antonio is doing ‘too much’ at West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham United’s failure to sign anyone in the January transfer window has been well covered and Frank McAvennie thinks it is now taking its toll.

The Irons have seen their form dip in recent weeks as the stress on David Moyes’ squad takes effect with the latest defeat coming away at Liverpool on Saturday.

One of those playing every game at the moment is striker Michail Antonio who has played every game for club and country other than the FA Cup trip to Kidderminster since December.

The 31-year-old Jamaican is the club’s only recognised senior striker and McAvennie can’t fathom why another wasn’t signed in the most recent transfer window.

“He’s being asked to do too much,” McAvennie said exclusively to West Ham Zone. “I still don’t understand why they didn’t sign anyone in January.

“He hasn’t been in great form and you can’t ask other players to fill in. There is so much to being a striker that a winger just can’t cut it.

“I have been saying this for months and then in January, we did nothing. Apparently, there were bids but we don’t know who they were for, so that’s great.”

There appears to be no rest in sight for Antonio now with every game seemingly crucial to the Irons’ season.

The return of the Europa League to the Hammers’ fixture schedule is going to pile even more pressure on Antonio to not only keep himself fit but produce the goods too.

At least they no longer have the FA Cup to worry about after Southampton dumped them out in round five.

In other West Ham news, we think this out of favour midfielder needs to leave on loan as he attracts interest from France.
