Frank McAvennie shares West Ham concerns despite 1-0 win v Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has sent a warning to West Ham over their defence despite their 1-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

A hard-fought victory over David Moyes’ old side sent the Irons to seventh in the Premier League table, leapfrogging their hosts in the process.

Everton only managed a meagre two shots on target, half of the visitor’s total, but they did muster 15 attempts, and that was a cause of concern for ex-Irons hero McAvennie.

“To be honest about it, Everton had enough chances, they could have scored a goal,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“Although we get the plaudits, and it’s great to carry on winning, you’ve got to say, there were a lot of chances there that they missed, though West Ham missed a few chances as well.

“But it was a good game and they’re [Everton] on the rise so it’s a good three points. I’m delighted with it.”

Can’t always be plain-sailing

The Irons enjoyed big back-to-back wins to kick off their 2021/22 Premier League campaign in August, winning 4-2 at Newcastle United [August 15] before thrashing Leicester City 4-1 at the London Stadium eight days later.

However, their two victories in the league since have both been by one-goal [2-1 versus Leeds United, 1-0 versus Everton], showing a different side of their game.

Angelo Ogbonna was the hero on Sunday with his second-half goal but he was also pressed into action at the other end as the Irons kept the Blues at bay.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have made contact over this 16-cap centre-forward amid his contract impasse.
