Frank McAvennie shares Michail Antonio fears after West Ham star’s Golden Boot aim
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Ex-West Ham star Frank McAvennie suggests injuries could dash Michail Antonio’s dream of winning the Premier League Golden Boot this season.
Antonio, 31, is currently tied at the top of the goalscoring charts with Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy, after the trio claimed five goals apiece in their first six games.
The Irons centre-forward is already halfway to his best-ever total [10 in 2019/20 and 2020/21], but he has only reached the 30-game barrier once in six full Premier League seasons at the club, owing to a spate of injuries during his time in east London.

McAvennie believes that could hold him back from achieving his aim after the Jamaica international shared his goal following last week’s win over Leeds United [Standard].
“The biggest problem for Michail is staying fit,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“I think he’ll score goals but he’s got to stay fit. In the last couple of seasons, he’s missed games.
“Hopefully, the club have sorted his hamstring problems. The biggest problem is keeping him fit.

“I’ve not got a problem with the boy saying that [aiming for the Golden Boot], he’s got a good chance, he’ll get chances created for him with the likes of [Said] Benrahma especially and [Pablo] Fornals. He could be there challenging.
“It’s a big statement, it’s a bold statement, [but] it shows you where the boy’s confidence is at the moment.”
