Frank McAvennie remains confident despite West Ham defeat against Frankfurt

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham might have fallen to a 2-1 defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt last night but Frank McAvennie is still not worried about his former side.

Michail Antonio scored the Hammers’ only goal but Ansgar Knauff and Daichi Kamada scored the goals for the Bundesliga side to give them the lead heading into their home leg next week.

It wasn’t a poor performance on the night though from the Irons with a number of chances being squandered and on another day, things could have been different.

McAvennie wasn’t best pleased with one tactic West Ham persisted with though and didn’t think it was something his former side should be doing.

“There’s still another game,” McAvennie said to West Ham Zone. “We had plenty of chances.

“Bowen had some unbelievable chances with one hitting the post and that overhead kick.

“A few things went wrong on the night but you’ve got to pick yourselves up because they’ve done well these boys.

“West Ham put so many balls into the box and the keeper was catching them all. I was there thinking ‘that’s not West Ham’.

Before the return leg in Germany though, Moyes has to get his side ready for a tough game at home to Arsenal with a top-six place in the Premier League still an important goal they need to try and reach.

Craig Dawson is suspended for the game so Kurt Zouma may have to play again after his rapid recovery from injury at centre-half.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are ready to punish a small portion of fans after what they did to German broadcasters last night.
