Frank McAvennie really wants to see Jesse Lingard at West Ham next season

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has revealed exclusively to West Ham Zone that he thinks Jesse Lingard likes playing for the Hammers and likes playing in London.

He also revealed that he was desperate to see his former club sign the 28-year-old from Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

Lingard had a fantastic loan spell at the London Stadium as he scored nine goals and provided five assists in just 16 appearances, and McAvennie wants to see him playing for the Hammers in the 2021/22 campaign.

He said: “I think he likes West Ham, I think he likes London.

“He’s a big fish at West Ham; he’s not at [Manchester United]. I think Lingard likes that.

“I like him; I think he’s been a breath of fresh air for West Ham.

I really do hope he [Moyes] signs him because he’s got energy; he’s got pace; he’s aggressive; he’s a pest to defenders.”

Should Lingard return?

Lingard looked a new man at the London Stadium under Moyes, and his form saw him receive an England recall though he missed out on the final Euro 2020 squad.

However, his impact while he was with the Hammers cannot be denied, and he helped them achieve a top-six finish that secured Europa League football.

If you compare his WhoScored rating with the rest of the Irons’ squad, you can see that Lingard was the Hammers’ second-top goalscorer in the league and achieved the second-highest average rating [WhoScored].

Therefore, it is no wonder that McAvennie wants to see Lingard in our colours next season, and it is hard not to agree with him.
