Frank McAvennie reacts to reports West Ham tabled bid for Cagliari striker Giovanni Simeone

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie would be delighted for West Ham to sign Cagliari striker Giovanni Simeone if he is anything like his dad, Diego.

According to Italian news outlet CalcioMercato, West Ham had a loan bid rejected for the Atletico Madrid manager’s son earlier this week [21/06/21].

The Irons are in desperate need of a striker after selling Sebastien Haller in January, and the 25-year-old is said to be high on their list of targets.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, ex-Irons forward McAvennie suggested he’d be a terrific signing if he shares the characteristics of his father, who made 106 appearances for Argentina during a distinguished playing career.

“His dad, what a player he was. What passion he brings to football, I love that.

“They say the modern day player can’t have that. There’s no way Simeone isn’t going to shout and bawl at players. He’s a throwback.

“Maybe his boy’s got a bit of that, if he’s got his energy and commitment, you could have that all day long.”

One to pass on

His dad may have been a legendary player, and now a legendary manager, but those talents haven’t quite extended to Giovanni.

He’s a decent striker who has hit double figures in Serie A three times in his career, but he’s not exactly prolific.

He scored just six league goals last season, albeit in a struggling Cagliari side, and we should be aiming a bit higher.

It’s not a new theme as he scored the same amount in the 2018/19 campaign for Fiorentina, and he has not added to the five international caps he made in 2018.

His star seems to be on the wane, and we should avoid making another move.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have lodged an ‘Important’ bid for this 25-year-old La Liga star.
