Frank McAvennie reacts to news West Ham stadium can return to full capacity for 2021/22 season

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has expressed his delight with the news that West Ham should be able to play in front of a capacity crowd at the London Stadium this season.

The ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic has ensured capacity crowds have been banned since March 2020, with stadiums mostly empty throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

However, the UK government recently announced plans to ease the remaining restrictions on social distancing, which means football stadiums can return to full capacity from July 19. [The Athletic]

West Ham actually posted an improved home record without fans last season, but ex-Irons striker McAvennie is adamant fans will be a big boost to David Moyes and his side.

“I’m just annoyed and disappointed that the fans weren’t in to see the boys last year because they played really well,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“It’s a shame they never got to see that because what they’ve seen over the years is dross to be honest, fighting against relegation year after year.

“Then the first year that they’ve gone for the European places, which was promised and delivered, they couldn’t see it.

“I felt for them.

“They’ll still have a go at the establishment when they’re back, that’s just fans, but it will not be that bad when the team is playing well, they’ll just be focused on the team.

“They’ve definitely been backing the team.

“It will be brilliant to get stadiums back full again.”

In other West Ham news, Fabrizio Romano claims the club have made contact over this ‘Powerful’ player who scored v Irons in 2020.
