Frank McAvennie reacts as West Ham reportedly set £100m Declan Rice price-tag
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has insisted that West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is worth £100million amid the “crazy” sums being paid in the transfer market.
Rice, 22, has been constantly linked with a move away from the London Stadium, with Chelsea consistently mentioned as a likely destination.
The Athletic [19/07/21] recently published a report claiming their “sources” had told them that the Irons value Rice at £100million, with the England international previously harbouring hope of a return to Chelsea, where he began his youth career.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, ex-Irons forward McAvennie hit out at the current state of affairs in the transfer market, but believes Rice is worth the going rate.
He said: “Clubs are paying £90million for centre-halves and goalkeepers now. The money has gone crazy.
“It’s nuts. Why would you pay that sort of money for a goalkeeper?
“As far as Declan is concerned, he’s worth that, all day long. In today’s market, he’s up there.
“West Ham want to keep him for another few years probably.”

If there is no urgent need to raise money, why should we be low-balled into accepting under-market fees?
Rice has just finished a stellar season for club and country, guiding West Ham to a sixth-placed finish and claiming a European Championship runners-up medal with England.
His stock is incredibly high and, at just 22, there are plenty of years left for him to develop further.
With the Europa League on the agenda this season now is not the time to sell Rice, and thus we can demand a big fee.
Of course, events may turn if he requests a transfer, but there’s no sign of that at the moment.
In other West Ham news, the Irons have tabled a bid for this 23y/o midfielder who scored five Europa League goals last season.
