Frank McAvennie reacts as West Ham plan major behind-the-scenes reshuffle

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is excited by reports suggesting that West Ham could be set to appoint ex-Manchester City man Mike Rigg as their new head of recruitment.

Irons insider ExWHUemployee recently claimed on The West Ham Way podcast [04/07/21] that the recent Burnley technical director is “in the mix” for the role after West Ham confirmed on their official club website [02/07/21] that they were “close” to an appointment.

ExWHUemployee said on Rigg: “He was responsible apparently for bringing [Sergio] Aguero to Manchester City. He’s also worked for QPR and he’s currently on gardening leave at Burnley. Your best bet is going to be Mike Rigg and it could be confirmed in the next few days, it will be interesting so watch this space.”

Speaking to West Ham Zone, ex-Irons striker McAvennie was enthusiastic about a potential move to bring Rigg to the London Stadium.

“If he brings in a few Aguero’s that would be nice,” McAvennie said.

“He’s obviously got contacts that are second to none, it’s great if you can bring people like that into the club.

“If anyone can come in and do half as good a job as Aguero did for Manchester City then I’ll be delighted with it.”

What’s on the agenda?

If Rigg does get the job as head of recruitment one would suspect that he would come armed with a list of targets and contacts for the club to pursue from the get-go.

With pre-season already well underway, and the Premier League season kicking off next month, the club will have to act fast to appoint Rigg to speed up the process of securing new recruits this summer.

There will almost certainly already be a number of players being tracked and contacted, regardless of Rigg’s move to the Irons, but his appointment would certainly expand the club’s knowledge and talent pool.

On the agenda will surely be a new forward, central midfielder, central defender and full-back cover, while competition for Lukasz Fabianski in goal could also be identified as we aim to enlarge our squad in preparation for the upcoming Europa League campaign.

In other West Ham news, Paolo Di Canio has admitted that this Irons star has blown him away amid a near ‘Impossible’ mission.
