Frank McAvennie reacts as West Ham decide to get rid of Winston Reid
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie will have no qualms with West Ham if they attempt to sell long-serving defender Winston Reid in the summer.
ExWHUemployee has reported on Patreon that the Hammers are ready to move Reid, 32, on ahead of next summer with a permanent move to Brentford on the cards.
Reid spent the second half of this season on loan at the West London club, playing 11 times for them as they won promotion from the Championship.
McAvennie fully expects the New Zealand centre-back to move on and when asked if he’s got any problems with him leaving, the ex-striker told West Ham Zone: “No, he’s out of the picture now – he’s only a couple of years younger than me!
“He’s had a wonderful career and had a swan song for Brentford in the play-off final.
“I don’t think he’d be too worried about staying at West Ham.”
Reid has been a great servant for West Ham but his injury issues have hampered him massively and it’s time he and the club went their separate ways.
The Kiwi defender has made 223 appearances in all competitions for the Irons and there’s no doubt it would have been more if it wasn’t for the regular setbacks.
To be fair to Reid, he’s done brilliantly to come back from his injury nightmare by playing well on loan at Sporting Kansas City in the MLS before joining Brentford in the winter and playing a role in their promotion-winning campaign.
He only played a handful of times for the Bees, starting seven matches. But he played a role nonetheless and we’re buzzing for him for that.
Let’s hope that if he does sign for Brentford, he can get some more game-time in the Premier League.
Good luck, Reidy.
In other West Ham news, this Hammers-linked ace has been spotted hanging around with two of Moyes’ players.
