Frank McAvennie reacts as West Ham and Vladimir Coufal clash over contract talks

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to stump up the cash and hand Vladimir Coufal what he deserves after reported contract problems.

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth claimed via live broadcast on Monday [26/07/21] that the 28-year- old right-back feels “let down” by the club’s latest contract offer, which is based more on appearances and performances rather than an increase in his basic wage [via Football Daily]

The parties are still in talks, according to Sheth, but there is currently a stalemate in negotiations, with Coufal unimpressed.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie was left baffled by events at the London Stadium.

“He’s come in, done his job, not on a lot of money, and now he’s a stalwart of the team,” McAvennie said.

“They’ve got to give him a new contract, the fans will not be happy.

“I just don’t get it, I just don’t understand why they would stall with someone like that. If that’s the case, then they are totally wrong.

“He’ll be back training now or fairly soon, so I would imagine it will get wrapped up fairly quickly.

“I can’t see him being a greedy boy, I think he gets on with his work. They all say that he and Tomas Soucek are great lads and very humble.

“I can’t see him being a problem but he will know what he’s worth, and his agent will know.

“As long as they’re not being greedy the club have to pay up.”

In other West Ham news, the Irons have made an approach to sign this English 24-year-old.
