Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham v Manchester City League Cup clash

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is desperate to see West Ham field a first-choice starting XI when they take on Manchester City in the League Cup tonight.

The Irons play host to the Premier League champions at the London Stadium with a place in the quarter-finals the reward for the victors.

David Moyes’ side beat Manchester United in the previous round and they must now navigate a way through Pep Guardiola’s star-studded outfit.

Ex-Irons star McAvennie believes his old club stand a great chance of progression if they name a strong side on Wednesday night, but he fears Moyes may opt to make a raft of changes.

“It depends what sides get put out, whether they’re going to put out a weakened side,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “I don’t know if Manchester City have a weakened side!

“I’m a great believer in going for it. [But] I don’t see the Irons putting out a strong, strong team. I would go for a home win but it depends on the teams, it really depends on the teams. Without knowing the teams I don’t know.

“Manchester City have a bigger and better squad, so I would have to think they’re favourites. But I would love to see West Ham go on a cup run. The fans deserve it.

“If David puts out his first team, then I think they’ll win it, I think they’ll beat Manchester City.”

In other West Ham news, Simon Jordan suggested this ‘Makeweight’ Irons transfer live on talkSPORT.
