Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham clash v Chelsea
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham will beat Chelsea at the London Stadium on Saturday evening – but only if Jesse Lingard plays.
Lingard, 28, has been in sensational form for the Hammers since January, scoring nine goals in 10 Premier League appearances for the London club.
However, the Manchester United loanee was forced off late on with an injury in the defeat to Newcastle last week, casting doubt about whether he can play against Chelsea this weekend.
McAvennie has praised Thomas Tuchel for the job he’s done in West London and believes West Ham face a tough match against the Blues.
However, he’s still backing the Irons to pick up at least one point in the Premier League showdown.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I think they might [struggle].
“Tuchel has come in and sorted them right out, there’s no doubting how good a manager he is and I think they’re playing alright.
“West Ham have to be at their very best to beat them. Sometimes people step up and that’s important for West Ham because playing against Chelsea is a big game, it’s a derby game.
“I’m sure David will bring somebody in and whoever he brings in, he’s worked his magic before and it’s not been pretty but it’s worked.
“I want to say they’ll beat them but it’s going to be a tough game. If Lingard plays, I think it will be a 2-1 win. If he doesn’t play it’ll be a draw.”
According to reliable Hammers insider ExWHUemployee, Lingard “should” be fit enough to face Chelsea on Saturday, which is no doubt a major boost for the Irons.
It’s also a big boost for McAvennie, as he clearly sees three points hinging on whether or not the England international is able to play.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are interested in this “sensational” player playing at a Premier League club.
