Frank McAvennie ‘optimistic’ for West Ham United chances in Europa League second leg v Frankfurt
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie believes West Ham can go to Frankfurt and win just like they did against Lyon to progress into the Europa League final.
The Hammers were beaten 2-1 at the London Stadium last week, and travel to Germany knowing they must win to stand a chance of making their first final under David Moyes.
But former striker McAvennie has taken plenty of positives from previous wins in the tournament and thinks the side are better on the counter, which bodes well for their trip and he believes they can do to Frankfurt what Frankfurt did to them on the counter.

“Well I think so,” he told West Ham Zone.
“I think you can get a bit of chances. You’re very optimistic with what they done in Lyon. Lyon are a good team. Went there and turned them over.
“You know, and I think maybe West Ham are more of a catch you on the break team now you know. So I think we can do to them, what they did [on Thursday].
“So I’m still very optimistic for it.”
Fans are very much on the same wavelength as McAvennie, with the general consensus being that this tie is far from over.
The Irons are much better on the counter attack and playing away from home will suit that, but they will need to be at their very best to pull off the comeback needed.

Frankfurt will know that too and will look to defend deep while still posing a threat going forward, and it’s something that Moyes will need to figure out.
But despite defeat this tie is far from over and there is optimism everywhere that they will be able to get the job done in Frankfurt on Thursday night.
In other West Ham news, Tony Cottee lets slip that West Ham have ‘done a deal’ for summer transfer and says it will be ‘announced soon’.
