Frank McAvennie: Jesse Lingard has blown his chance, West Ham must avoid him

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to leave Jesse Lingard in the past after claiming the Manchester United attacker has “blown his chance”.

Lingard, 28, enjoyed a sensational spell at the London Stadium last season, scoring nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances after leaving the Red Devils on loan in January.

However, the England international has seen his Premier League minutes diminish since returning to Old Trafford over the summer, failing to make a single start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With Lingard now linked with a move in January again, ex-Irons star McAvennie is desperate for his old side to avoid him, despite calling for his return during the summer.

“They’re [Manchester United] not giving Lingard a new contract I heard,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“Brilliant isn’t it, he’s blown it.

“Listen, I hope West Ham don’t take him back. We knew he wasn’t getting a game. It’s not for me. I liked him, I wanted him, he was a breath of fresh air.

“[But] The bottom line is he’s blown his chance. Did he honestly think he was going to go and get a game with [Cristiano] Ronaldo and all of that lot?

“I saw it coming. It’s going to cost him his England place.”

In other West Ham news, the Irons have made contact over this 16-cap centre-forward amid his contract impasse.
