Frank McAvennie issues West Ham European rallying cry

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to “go for it” in their final few games as they aim to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

David Moyes’ men have lost their last two fixtures but remain in the hunt to finish in a top-four position in the Premier League with five games to play.

As it stands, the Irons are three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea but are well-placed to potentially qualify for the Europa League or the brand new Europa Conference League.

Next up for the Hammers is a clash against Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday night and ahead of that match, McAvennie has issued a rallying cry to his former club.

“This is what West Ham bought into, fighting for Europe every year,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“If you’d have told me West Ham would be in the Europa League come the end of the season, I’d have probably said you need to be locked up.

“This is what the fans are buying. If they don’t get in the Champions League, brilliant, they’ll be in the Europa League. Go for it.”

If West Ham want to qualify for the Champions League then they really need to beat Burnley in Lancashire on Monday.

Moyes’ men have suffered a dip in form so they need to bounce back as soon as possible, starting with the trip to play the Clarets, who won 4-0 at Wolves last weekend.

After playing Sean Dyche’s side, the Irons have a favourable run of fixtures that sees them play Everton, Brighton, West Brom and Southampton.

If we could go unbeaten between now and the end of the season, that would be a huge achievement but a top-four finish may hinge on how Chelsea or Leicester perform in the final weeks too.

In other West Ham news, McAvennie’s also shared his thoughts on the Irons’ bid to land this goal machine from a British club.
