Frank McAvennie is delighted with West Ham decision to hand David Moyes a new contract

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has lauded the decision by West Ham to award David Moyes a new contract to keep him at the club until 2024.

West Ham announced on their club website on June 12 that the Scot had signed a new three-year deal to remain in east London.

Moyes led the Irons to a top-six spot in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, and he will now lead them into the Europa League next season.

Ex-Irons striker McAvennie delivered an upbeat verdict on the news that Moyes has extended his stay.

“That was massive, I was well pleased with that,” he told West Ham Zone. “He totally deserves it.

“There was a lot of people disputing it when Moyes came back, but he took his time and built a team and now you can see it’s a Moyes team because they all work their socks off, there are no primadonnas and they’re good to watch.”

Old dog, new tricks

Not many supporters saw this coming when Moeys arrived back at West Ham for a second spell in December 2019.

He steered us to Premier League safety in 2017 but he was never loved by the fans who grew tired of the style of football he had implemented in order to achieve the results needed.

That’s why there was an air of scepticism when he was brought back less than two years ago.

But those fears have now been vanquished after a sensational second spell at the club.

European football appeared a pipe dream when we narrowly avoided relegation in the 2019/20 season, but Moyes rejuvenated the side and oversaw one of our best seasons in recent history.

We can’t wait to see what the next three years hold under him.

In other West Ham news, Ally McCoist was blown away by this Irons star compared to a Manchester United legend.
