Frank McAvennie is confident West Ham will sign a striker this summer
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie is confident that West Ham will bite the bullet and sign a striker before the end of the summer transfer window.
Currently, Michail Antonio remains the only senior centre-forward option at the club, after Sebastien Haller left to join Ajax in January and was not replaced.
The Irons are yet to strengthen in the attacking department this summer and look likely to be without nine-goal talisman Jesse Lingard, who looks set to stay at Manchester United for the 2021/22 campaign after his half-season heroics while on loan at the London Stadium earlier this year.

One name that has recently been mentioned with regard to a move to West Ham is Liverpool striker Divock Origi, with Football Insider reporting last week [07/08/21] that the Irons have opened preliminary talks to sign the 26-year-old Belgian, with a cut-price fee of £15m mentioned.
When asked by West Ham Zone about Origi, McAvennie stressed the importance of signing a new striker before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.
Ex-Irons forward McAvennie said: “There’s still a few weeks to go, I think we’ll get a striker in, I really do.
“I think that’s a much-needed position to fill. Antonio can play in a two and a one but he needs someone there because he gets injured, that’s the biggest problem.”

West Ham Zone View
There’s no beating around the bush on this one – West Ham need a striker and must sign one before the end of the summer transfer window.
It was scary enough to back Antonio as our sole centre-forward for half a season without Europe, but a full season with Europa League football added on with just the 31-year-old would be pure neglect on behalf of the board.
Origi is one name mentioned, and while he wouldn’t cause mass celebrations among the Irons faithful, at least he is a striker who has shown he can score goals in big games, like the 2019 Champions League final.
In other West Ham news, the Irons want to sign this ‘Brilliant’ young attacker who shone on Sky Sports on the weekend.
