Frank McAvennie furious with ‘Ridiciulous’ West Ham failure to sign new striker
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has blasted West Ham over their failure to sign a new striker in the January transfer window.
Sebastien Haller was sold to Ajax but a replacement striker wasn’t signed, leaving injury-prone Michail Antonio as the only centre-forward among David Moyes’ first-team options.
As expected, Antonio has since suffered an injury, meaning he’s missed West Ham’s last three Premier League fixtures.
McAvennie is furious with the behind-the-scenes decision-making at the London Stadium that led to the shortage of strikers in the winter.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Injuries have come in and they’ve had to change the way they play.
“I think it’s awful [and] the biggest mistake they made by not signing a striker and not having a back-up striker.
“For a club like West Ham, it’s ridiculous because Antonio is not going to play every game.
“He may play four and then miss three so you need another one.”
It does appear that West Ham are going to sign a new centre-forward in the summer transfer window in order to bolster Moyes’ options up front.
Tammy Abraham has been strongly linked with a move to East London while talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has recently claimed that Danny Ings and Joshua King are also potential additions.
While it remains to be seen who will come in, it’s something that the Hammers need to prioritise going into the summer.
As good as Antonio has been, you can hardly say he’s a natural striker having spent most of his career playing on the wing or as a full-back.
His injury issues are becoming a real nuisance too so someone with a solid track record for staying fit and being able to find the back of the net is just what Moyes needs.
In other West Ham news, McAvennie’s also shared his thoughts on the Irons’ bid to land this goal machine from a British club.
