Frank McAvennie: European promises by GSB have not been delivered at West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes David Sullivan and David Gold have failed to deliver on promises since taking over at West Ham in 2010.

The duo, alongside vice-chairman Karren Brady, joined the Irons over a decade ago and immediately set about making their future intentions clear with aspirations of becoming a Champions League club.

However, last season was the first time the club qualified directly to the Europa League group stage, which kicks off next month.

Speaking to West Ham Zone about whether the owners will sell up amid reports that British-based consortium PAI Capital have launched a takeover bid, with another one expected to be in the offing, ex-Irons attacker McAvennie has detailed his disappointment at the last 11 years.

“The owners will do what is good for the owners, so until something happens I’m not going to get my hopes up,” McAvennie said.

”I’m not going to say they’ve been terrible, they’ve taken us there [Europe].

“But this is only the first year they have given us what they promised and that was fighting for the Champions League and European spots.”

Empty promises

Delusions of grandeur spring to mind regarding the current owners at West Ham.

They came to the club with some powerful statements and the expectation that the club would become a force to be reckoned with in England, but we have suffered multiple disappointments since 2011, including relegation to the Championship.

Last season was a big surprise as David Moyes managed to guide us to a sixth-place finish despite being fairly hamstrung in the transfer market.

Now is the time to build on that success.

But after an extremely underwhelming transfer window thus far, that looks like a remote possibility.

In other West Ham news, Graeme Souness & Micah Richards hailed this ‘Brilliant’ Irons ace after Sunday’s 4-2 win v Newcastle.
